Arletta School House

Project Name: Arletta School House
Project Location: Gig Harbor, WA

AUE served as the structural engineer for the renovation of the historic Arletta School House in Gig Harbor, Washington. The project focused on adapting the building to meet modern functional and accessibility needs while carefully preserving its historic character.

The interior renovation required selective demolition of existing load-bearing stud walls supporting the roof’s wood truss system. AUE designed new structural headers and columns to accommodate the revised layout, with new wood columns strategically aligned over the existing concrete foundation walls in the basement to ensure efficient and reliable load transfer. Retrofit details were also provided for the existing wood beam-to-column connections, as the original condition relied solely on bearing without a physical connection.

AUE’s exterior scope included the concrete design for replacement concrete entrance stairs and a new exterior concrete ramp at the south entrance, improving site accessibility.
